Dysfunction (often bone fracture or bone degradation due to poor blood supply) of the small bone at the base of the thumb. Depending on type/mechanism of injury, Scaphoid dysfunction is characterised by local pain/tenderness and swelling at the base of the thumb, aggravated by thumb and wrist movements. In some instances, if blood supply is interrupted, the scaphoid bone may degenerate causing serious problems with the function of the thumb.
