Definition:
Overstretch, overloading or tear of either the anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments deep inside the knee joint. These crossed ligaments connect the lower part of the thighbone to the top end of the shinbone and function to create a pivot point for knee movement and limit the movement of one bone relative to the other. Cruciate ligament dysfunction (most commonly the Anterior Cruciate Ligament) is characterised by deep knee pain, swelling and eventual instability.
